News From Westchester County Airport

AvPORTS at Westchester County is a unique and busy environment for airport facilities management. The over 170 men and women that make up the AvPORTS Team at HPN provides airport management, operations, maintenance, airline services, administration, accounting, noise abatement and environmental services and aircraft rescue and firefighting.

Emergency Response Drill

We kicked off May with a major emergency response drill on Saturday May 5. The drill was a simulated crash, complete with a fire, a ripped apart airplane and volunteers playing the part of victims. Over 1,000 people were involved in the full-scale emergency exercise, from first responders to hospital workers to people from the coroner’s office. We had approximately 150 volunteers who played victims, and many of them are future EMS first responders in training, including students from Westchester BOCES. Of course local residents were warned that fire trucks and ambulances around the airport were just there for the drill. A special recognition goes to our Terminal Supervisor Gina Maset for helping coordinate all the core groups.

Armed Forces Day

Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve the United States’ armed forces. HPN has been fortunate that over the past years we have handled a charter for the Honor Flight Network. The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. It transports our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. This year again, on May 19, Armed Forces Day, AvPORTS Airline Services had the honor of handling an American Airlines Airbus 320. Kudos to our Safety & Training Supervisor Jason Paulino for bringing a team together to handle the AA A320 that transported these fine American Heroes to DCA.

National Business Aviation Association Regional Forum

Next up on June 21 HPN hosted the National Business Aviation Association Regional Forum. HPN was also the host two years ago and it was an amazing experience. This forum brought together aircraft owners, operators, manufacturers, exhibitors, static displays and personnel from all walks of aviation. AvPORTS will be in the spotlight as host of this important industry event and the operator of Westchester County Airport.

The event two years ago was such a success that NBAA has requested HPN host for the next five years. With over 120 vendors and 3500 attendees this event brings an economic boost to the entire County of Westchester filling our hotels and restaurants.

NBAA Regional Forum

The NBAA Regional Forum brings current and prospective business aircraft owners, operators, manufacturers, customers and other industry personnel together for a one-day event at HPN.   Regional Forums incorporate exhibits, static displays of aircraft and education sessions into one-day events located across the country to help introduce business aviation to local officials and prospective owners and operators, and to address any current issues in the regions.
