Outstanding Achievement in Small General Aviation Snow & Ice Control Award Presented by International Aviation Snow Symposium.
(Gary, IN – May 14th, 2019) – Gary / Chicago International Airport has been honored with the 2018-2019 Balchen / Post Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Small General Aviation Snow and Ice Control Category. Awards were presented to the “Snow Crews” of the airports in the Snow Belt for their dedicated efforts in maintaining their airports in safe and operational status during the 2018-2019 winter season.
Gary / Chicago International Airport Celebrates 50th International Flight
(Gary, Indiana – July 2, 2019) –Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY) celebrated its 50th international flight, capping a key milestone for the newly opened Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Facility. Since opening the permanent, state-of-the-art facility in October of 2018, air travelers have been able to fly into the airport from any global destination without needing to stop elsewhere to clear customs and GYY has averaged approximately eight (8) landings per month.
Gary/Chicago International Airport Hosts Tuskegee Airmen “Young Eagles” Aviation Initiative Youth Initiative Fosters Next Generation of Aviators and Aeronautic Engineers
(Gary, Indiana – July 31, 2019) –Nearly two dozen local students were initiated as the newest members of the “Young Eagles” youth aviation program on a hot and humid afternoon on July 13th at the Gary / Chicago International Airport (GYY). The Young Eagles is a nationwide youth initiative created by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) introducing local students aged 8 to 17 to aviation. The Chicago “DODO” Chapter of the historic Tuskegee Airmen coordinated the event, and many members were on hand to welcome the young aviators as they prepared for takeoff.
Gary / Chicago International Airport Conducts Bomb Threat Simulation Tabletop Exercise Included Regional First Responders to Ensure Readiness Training
(Gary, Indiana – August 5, 2019) – On Wednesday, June 26th the Gary / Chicago International Airport (GYY) held a tabletop exercise reviewing the airport’s emergency preparedness in coordination with airport staff and tenants as well as police, fire and emergency medical technician (EMT) personnel from the City of Gary. The focus of the tabletop exercise was a bomb threat and explosion simulation and was a requirement of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
“The purpose of the tabletop exercise is to determine the operational readiness of GYY staff, tenants and first responders in their response and recovery time,” said airport Executive Director Duane Hayden. “These simulations allow first responders opportunities to enhance communications, information sharing and overall coordination between airport stakeholders and are vital in preparation for potential real-life scenarios.”
The exercise involved scenario planning, with in-depth discussions and problem solving among a host of airport stakeholders to ensure coordination vital to the emergency response was to occur in the event of an actual emergency.
Gary / Chicago International Airport Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for East Corporate Hangar Facility is Latest Enhancement to Region’s Premier Mid-Sized Airport
(Gary, Indiana – August 16, 2019) –Dozens of aviation professionals and leaders from around the region participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the East Corporate Hangar at the Gary / Chicago International Airport (GYY). The grand opening for the 19,600 square foot $2.5 million facility is the latest enhancement to the airport and further solidifies its position as the region’s premier midsized airport. Indiana-based Sage-Popovich, Inc. has signed a 10-year lease to occupy the new hangar.
Chicago Air & Water Show
The 61st Annual Chicago Air and Water show is the largest and longest-running free show of its kind in the United States. On August 17 and 18, nearly 2 million spectators looked to the sky for some of the most amazing air performers, including the world renowned Blue Angels.
Gary/Chicago International Airport Latest Challenge: The ARFF Takeover
Avports recently took over the ARFF Staffing at the Gary/Chicago International Airport. Our Operations Team are now undergoing extensive training to become not only certified in operations but in Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting.
Hire Vets Medallion Award
Our airport was recently awarded the 2019 Hire Vets Medallion for demonstrating strong commitment to recruiting, hiring, and retaining our Nation’s veterans.
On behalf of GYY’s TEAM Ralynn Crockett and Henry Mook will be accepting the 2019 HIRE VETs Golden Medallion Award at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, DC on November 6th. The Hire Vets Medallion Program recognizes employers for demonstrating strong commitment to recruiting, hiring, and retaining our Nation’s veterans. It is the only Department of Labor Award for hiring veterans. GYY currently employs 8 veterans.
